Where is the justice? Where is the freedom to pursue happiness? Where is the equal protection under the laws? It’s supposedly all under the 14th amendment in the U.S. Constitution. It’s all there, written in black and white:
“No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” ~US. Constitution.
Then why is it that we (gays and lesbians) can’t marry? For years people have been lobbying to get laws passed both on the state level and the federal level, and until recently very few have succeeded. Public officials have publicly stated that they will not pass a law because their religious beliefs say that it is wrong. If I remember correctly, the very first amendment on the US. Constitution specifically states that church and state are to be separated.
Recently several states have implemented “civil unions” and some politicians have expressed their support of civil unions at a federal level. According to these politicians these civil unions would be considered separate from marriage but equivalent. May I remind these states and politicians that by implementing these so called “civil unions” that are separate but equal, that they are indeed still very much in violation of our 14th amendment rights. I will reference Brown vs. the board of education. The 1954 landmark trial in which, the US Supreme court ruled that the “separate but equal” act was in violation of our rights, because there was no just reason for it, nor does it give us equal protection under the laws. To date, that ruling has never been overturned. Then why do we continue to allow our government to violate our rights. The very government who is supposed to provide for us and protect us is the very government who is betraying us and treating us as lesser than human beings.
I say it’s time to stand up people! Let’s take our government to court! Let’s sue them for violating our rights! Let’s take back what our forefathers fought very hard for us to have! Let’s win back our freedom!
