HEARTBREAK
by Ian Clark

The lights go up to find Alex with a sad smile watching a "jock" walk by. He is on his knees in a high school hallway looking in his locker

Alex(to crowd): Well, That jock who just walked past is Sean, and I am Alex, but, all my friends call me X. (starts to pace the stage, maybe sits on edge of stage) I have had the biggest crush on him since the 6th grade, and now it is the start of sophomore year. Well, let me tell you guys a little something about the towns that this school is in. I live in Wheaton, and this is Wheaton Warrenville South High School. I am gay, but still in the closet, cause, well... you see, the people here are definitely not, lets just say "accepting." So, I have decided to get a group of my closest friends together to tell them after school, cause you know, it’s high school, this is the time you find who your real friends are, and who you really are. Anyway, if they are really my friends, they will accept me for who I am… Right? But still I have this terrible feeling that I will hurt, and be hurt by, some of the ones that I love the most. Wish me the best of luck, and I am proud to be the on who gets to welcome you, to HEARTBREAK! (at this point there may be some romantic music, during which the students come on with our main characters in the center dancing around Sean and Alex, and then the chords change and become harsh and then, sad)

(Bell rings, Alex falls back into the crowd of students rushing across the stage)

teacher(from offstage): Okay students, it seems we just have a few minutes left until the end of your first day back at school, so go ahead and socialize until the bell rings, any questions?

Student: Do we have homework?

Teacher: Did I give you homework

Student: No?

Teacher: Correct, you just have to be prepared to come to school tomorrow, and, don’t forget your supplies, and remember chem-is-try

Chorus of students begin to groan and complain

(bell)

Alex enters with 3 of his friends
(Abi, in band, holding a flute case, somewhat clumsy)
(Chelsea, aka Chelly, happy, energetic)
(Elliot, only other guy in the group)

Chelly: So, how was everyones summer?

Elliot: good, could have been longer

Abi: Same

Chelly: and you X?

Alex: Did a lot of thinking, finding out who I am, some deep shit, a lot to tell you guys.

Abi: What do you need to tell us, you know we're always hear for you.

Alex: Thanks, well, I don’t know how to say it, I... I think, no, I know... I'm gay

Chelly: That's cool

Elliot: no way dude... you totally are not, You are NOT gay

Abi: if hes gay, hes gay, you cant change it

Elliot: I gotta go, but dude, I KNOW you arent gay

(Ian, a junior, walks in)

Alex: Well that could have been worse?

Ian: It will be, trust me

Chelly: Hey Ian, you heard it all?

Ian: yeah, so, introduce me

Abi: sorry, Ian this is Alex, Alex, Ian

Alex: its very nice to meet you

Ian: thank you, its fagulous to meet you

Chelly: Hey, when do the GSA meetings start up?

Alex: GSA? what is that?

Ian: Gay-Straight Alliance, you should come, its a lot of fun

Chelly: Soooo... when?

Ian: I think next week, Monday after school

Alex: Cool, i gotta go, my parents will be pissed if I get home late

Ian: Speaking of parents, do they know yet?

Alex: Well, no, my sister does, but, i dont know, I'm afraid to tell them

Ian: Okay, well see you guys tomorrow, I got to get to work, love ya chels

Chelly: love you too

Alex: well bye

(end scene)

Scene 2

(It is Monday, the Abi, Chelly, Nick, Ian, and Alex walk into Ms. Dehmlow’s room. They sit down in a semi circle with other students, who are already there: Erin, Maddy, Phong, Lean, and others, Ian sits on Dylan’s lap. Dylan is a sophmore, and Ian’s boyfriend)

Ms. D: Welcome, how was everyone’s summer?

Ian: Eh, too short, but I got to go to Costa Rica.

Dylan: Yeah, while I stayed home and did nothing.

Chelly: Hey, its not like he’s promiscuous

Ms D: So, (to Alex) you seem to be new here, tell everyone your name and grade.

Alex: I’m Alex, and I am a sophomore

Ms D: It’s nice to have you, now what do you guys want to talk about?

Alex: How you can come out to your parents.

Ms. D: Ah, yes, Ian, do you want to take this, since you know what its like?

Ian: Sure, I know that your worried what your parents will do, but try not to. Most parents learn to accept that their child is gay over time. You should really do it for your own sake, that is a heavy burden to carry and you will never truly trust, or be open with your parents. I believe it is vital to your relationship to let them know. Now how to do it. If it ever comes up, you can say something about it, and then continue on like its no big deal. You can also wait until the time feels right, that’s how I came out, I kinda just said it.

Dylan: Yeah, but don’t be too overwhelming with it, some people will feel like your shoving it in their face.

Alex: Thanks, I think I'm ready

(All leave together, go to front hallway, everyone leaves, only Abi, Chelly, Ian, Dylan, and Alex remain)

(Sean walks in, unnoticed)

Ian: Alex, if you have any trouble, any at all, call any of us, we're here for you. We know what your going through

Sean: Hey guys

(chorus of greetings)

Sean: What are you all here for?

Chelly: GSA

Sean: What?

Abi: Gay-Straight Alliance

Sean: Sweet, bring me with next time.

Ian: Do you really want to come? We talk about a wide range of stuff, from, I swear to god, gay cartoons, to what we discussed today, coming out to your parents.

Sean: So I assume you'll be doing that tonight Alex?

Alex: Umm. yeah.

Sean: Well I gotta go, here's my number Alex, if you need to talk call me, Ill meet you right in front of the school.

Alex: Thanks.

(End Scene)

Scene 3

(Raining, Alex is standing in front of the school, he pulls out a cell phone. He is crying and bleeding, and has a black eye.)

Alex: Hey...Sean, I need some help...yeah, I'm already here...wait, could you bring some towels?... well, I'm bleeding...Ok

(Sean runs on)

Sean: Oh my god, are you allright? What happened?

Alex: Lets get inside to talk about it.

Sean: Okay

(Sean wraps his arm around Alex and they walk away.)

(End Scene)

Scene 4

(Alex and Sean are in Sean's bedroom when Sean's parents walk in.)

Dad: Are you okay Alex, you look really beat up.

Mom: We can take you to the hospital.

Alex: I'll be find, I just need some sleep.

Dad: Okay, good night guys.

Mom: If you need anything ask, good night.

Sean: 'Night

Alex: 'Night

(Sean's parents leave. Alex starts to put a pillow on the floor.)

Sean: No, you can sleep in the bed with me, it's cold, and you're still wet.

Alex: Are you sure?

Sean: Of course(moment of silence) You know whats funny? I have had a crush on you since 6th grade, but always thought you were straight.

Alex: *chuckles* Yeah, I had a crush on you too.

Sean: Cool, now we HAVE to hook up. Get yourself in this bed sexy.

(lights dim and in the darkness Sean and Alex hold each other close.)

Alex: I love you Sean.

Sean: I love you too.

(End Scene)

(All come on to stage. Ian, Dylan, Alex and Sean step forward.)

Ian: I would love to say, and they lived happily ever after

Alex: But ever after is yet to come.

(curtains close and intermission.)

(Sean and Jess are on stage arguing)

Jess: There is no way that you can be gay, you always talked about girls.

Sean: Trust me, I know I'm gay. I just did that because I was afraid of people finding out.

Jess: You just haven't found a good girl. Let me give you one good kiss and you'll forget all that fag stuff.

Sean: Just cut it out, I'm not interested.

Jess: Then I guess I have to do all the work myself.

(Jess forces herself on Sean as Alex walks up)

Jess: What did I tell you?

Alex: What the fuck?

Sean: Alex, let me explain, she..

Alex: Explain it to someone who's listening, you fucking asshole, JESUS, I knew this was to good to be true.

Sean: Alex stop, don't walk away from me, from us!

Alex: I walked into your arms thinking I found love, so now I'm walking out realizing the mistake I made. I hope I don't have the misfortune to see you ever again.

(Alex walks off the stage and Sean falls to his knees crying.)

Sean: ALEX, WAIT! I love you so much. FUCK. I can't live without you.

(Jess walks up to comfort Sean)

Jess: It's okay Sean, you'll be fine, I'm here for you.

Sean: You're here for me? Fuck off, this is your fault in the first place, I'm not going to be fine!

(Sean stomps away and the lights go down on Jess)

(at school on Monday, everyone is called to the gym for an announcement, which is being given by Nick, the Junior class president and Chelly’s beau)

Nick: Everyone, please quite down, I regret to inform you that over this past weekend Sean was attacked for being a homosexual, he is in the ICU and there is a chance that he will not survive. The school has counselors here for you to talk to if necessary. The students who performed this heinous act of hate have been expelled.

(after everyone files out, only the gang is left)

Alex: FUCK! Could this year get any worse?

Ian: I heard about your fight X, and I’m sure that Sean understands, and that he forgives you.

Alex: But now he’s leaving me, what am I supposed to do? I barely survived the weekend without him, how can I live the rest of my life.

Chelly: It’s okay, we’ll always be here for you. If you need to talk or anything just tell us okay?

Alex: Thanks guys, I’ll talk to you later.

(after they all leave in the background you can hear the sounds of a hospital, the most prominent being a heart rate monitor. It slowly speeds up and then flat-lines. Someone screams “oh my god” and then there is an ambulance siren and the audience can see the lights coming from offstage)

(our gang is standing in a church with two coffins in center stage, above each is a picture, one of Sean and the other of Alex, between is a picture of both of them together.)

Ian: neither died from what we were told. They both died from the same thing. They both died from a broken heart.

(in the background, “I will follow you” begins to play softly, slowly growing louder)

(slowly they start to chuckle)

Ian: I fell like we are living in one of those really campy yet cliché movies, You’ll laugh, you’ll cry. It’s a tearjerker.

Abi: Adam and Steve

Chelly: A regular Romeo and Julio

All: A HEARTBREAK!
